Living in the Present

A few days ago I was meeting the girls.....the girls with the grandmother faces....for lunch at 1:00. On my hands and knees working in my garden, I asked Bill the time. When he said 1:40, I jumped up, did the few necessary things to be seen in public and drove off hoping the girls would still be there.

I arrived when they were preparing to leave, and once again I found myself thinking about what I've been pondering for years now......"how do I live more in the present?" Well....this was one more example of my yet unanswered question. Here I was....on my knees....totally in the present....digging in this wonderful earth and missed my 1:00 future. Do I need to wear a buzzer that will go off when my 1:00 future is here so I won't miss it because I'm enjoying the present?

Seriously.....although I don't spend a lot of time looking at the past or wondering "what if?", I sure can get caught up wondering about tomorrow. Obviously, there are times when I need to make plans....for myself....and with others. Maybe it's about being flexible, trusting the process, praying and breathing.

What are some of the ways you practice staying in the present? I'd love your comments.

  1. Maybe the present was exactly where
God wanted you - digging in His earth. My problem with staying in the present is that I tend to stay too much in the past. I am reading "The Shack" and just finished the chapter Wade In The Water which addresses living in the past, present and future. My plan is to re-read this chapter until I can truly understand the message of living in the present.

What I do struggle with is having the peace and passion of Christ in my soul. I don't know if I have completely givn myself up to Him and if I haven't then how do I?

  2. That is me..using my senses I am appreciating God's world through them, as much as possible..listening to the wind, seeing the sunsets and smelling the new spring flowers..

  3. Julane,

First, this is a beautiful site! As my English husband would say, "Well done"! I love the question you pose..."how do you stay in the present"? I have spent a few moments pondering and wanted to quickly share.

    Sincerely,
    Molly Massey

My first second of pondering I actually chuckled out loud because I used to take yoga to attempt to stay in the present if only for three minutes of my sixty minute class. It was only on November 21, 2007 when I was blessed with the birth of our son that I truly began my journey of living in the present. Don't get me wrong, there are still moments that I catch myself drifting but within seconds Pressley brings me right back. Sometimes he brings me back with a touch on my hand as if to say, "mommy pay attention". Other times, and most often, it is making certain he is not getting into mischief! I can frequently be observed saying,"Press no touch, Press be careful, Press be gentle with your puppy". Instead of allowing these moments to frustrate me I stop what I'm doing when ever possible and participate with Pressley. Not only am I richer for the experience, but I am constantly reminded of how abundant and present love always is! What an amazing discovery!
